What is a 3:4 aspect ratio?

The 3:4 aspect ratio is commonly used for portrait photos and videos shot on smartphones and for sharing on social media. It's a portrait-oriented of the landscape 4:3 aspect ratio previously found on older televisions.

The 3:4 ratio is 25% taller than the 1:1 square aspect ratio and 25% shorter than the 9:16 tall aspect ratio.

1:1 vs 4:5 vs 9:16 aspect ratio

The aspect ratio has a standard format of 3:4 or W:H, where W is the width and H is the height of an image, screen, or container. In digital space, the measurement unit is in pixels. You can pronounce it "three-by-four" or "three-to-four" aspect ratio.

3:4 ratio formula

You can use the three-by-four ratio formula to determine if an image or display has a 3:4 aspect ratio. First, you must determine the width and height of your image, video, or screen in centimeters, inches, or pixels. Then, divide the width by the height. If the result is 0.75, it has a 3:4 aspect ratio.

$${Ratio} = \frac{Width}{Height} = \frac{3}{4} = 0.75$$

To find a new width (W) from a desired height (H):

$${W} = {H} \times 0.75$$

To find a new height (H) from a desired width (W):

$${H} = \frac{W}{0.75} = {W} \times {1.33333}$$

FAQs

How do I calculate the 3:4 aspect ratio?

The 3:4 aspect ratio is a screen or image format that proportionally contains three units horizontally for every four vertically. It can be calculated by dividing the width by height and getting a value of 0.75.

For example, the ratio between the width and height of the VGA (480 x 640) and XGA (768 x 1,024) resolutions equals 0.75.

How to use 3:4 aspect ratio calculator by Calculator Hub?

Our 3:4 aspect ratio calculator is easy to use. You only need to input one dimension (width or height), and the calculator will automatically calculate the other dimension based on the 3:4 aspect ratio. For instance, if you enter a width of 600 pixels, the calculator will calculate a height of 800 pixels.

On top of that, by entering a screen diagonal, you will also get additional information, including the screen's width, height, pixel density, and more.
