What is a waist-to-hip ratio calculator?
The Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) calculator is handy for determining your hip circumference (HC) and waist circumference (WC) ratio and assessing the associated risk level based on the ratio and gender.
What is the waist-to-hip ratio?
The waist-to-hip ratio measures the amount of fat stored around the waist and hip area in proportion to the body's overall size. To calculate it, divide the waist circumference (WC) by the hip circumference (HC).
Research has found that individuals with higher waist-to-hip ratios are at an increased risk of developing health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.[1]
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), A healthy waist-to-hip ratio is typically below 0.9 for men and 0.85 for women.[2]
Measuring waist and hip circumference
In the following video, Dr. Evan Matthews demonstrates how to measure waist and hip circumference.
To measure waist and hip circumference, use the following instructions.
Waist Circumference:
- Stand up straight and breathe out.
- Use a flexible tape measure to check the distance around the smallest part of your waist, just above your belly button.
- Make sure the tape measure is tight enough.
- Note down the measurement.
Hip Circumference:
- Measure the distance around the most significant part of your hips, typically the widest part of your buttocks.
- Again, ensure the tape measure is snug but not uncomfortable.
- Record this measurement as well.
